2015 Control System Beta Test Teams

Blog Date:
Wednesday, July 2, 2014 - 08:39

Please see the note below from our 2015 Control System Development Team.

First, we want to thank the more than 200 FRC Teams who applied to be Beta Test Teams for the 2015 Control System. The selected teams are at the bottom of this blog post. Here are the expectations of our Beta Test teams:

      • Act as ambassadors for FIRST and the 2015 Control System
      • Direct concerns and issues regarding the control system to FIRST
      • Transplant the 2015 Control System hardware into an existing FRC robot to perform basic functionality testing
      • Designate one lead student and one technical mentor to serve as the communicators or test results
      • Post findings on a bi-weekly basis (including but not limited to bugs, incompatibilities, documentation edits, best-practices, etc.)
      • Agree to serve as “Control System Experts” and provide support to teams in their surrounding areas for the 2015 seasonBe available to answer questions from local Teams and from the broader FRC community;
      • Release every piece of Team-developed code;
      • Open facility to local teams to observe or assist in the test program;
      • Hold at least one Saturday controls training seminar open to all neighboring teams prior to the 2015 Kickoff (this schedule is to be posted publically);
      • Agree to return 2015 Control System components to FIRST within 14 days upon request

2015 hardware is expected to FIRST by the end of July and will be repackaged and sent to Beta Test teams as quickly as possible. The Beta Test program will run from August to October/November as needed.

We’ve created a Google Map (updated to include all teams, not just US, and multiple teams in the same city) of the location of the Beta Test teams so you can find the team closest to you!

We’d also like to thank our dedicated 2015 Alpha Test Teams for all the work they put in to help us get to this point. We couldn’t have done it without you!

Comments

Note: Where you see cities with multiple teams (Montréal, NYC, Pittsburgh, Rochester, San Jose, Seattle) on the map it only comes up once.

Also, Frank, what is your favorite robot film? And why is it "The Day the Earth Stood Still"?

Happy Summer and Thank You!

Hi Conor, we fixed the map by adding a few more specific addresses for teams that are in the same city, check it out now. Also, I probably don't have one favorite robot film, but among my favorites are "Metropolis" (1927), "Alien" (1979) and "Blade Runner" (1982). OK, maybe I'm pushing the definition of 'robot' with "Blade Runner" but I think it's close enough.

I really wish the beta test application was better publicized... we didn't go to Championships, didn't see the handout, and missed the link at the end of the other post. Is it absolutely too late to get in on it, or will there be another chance to get access to the new Controls system prior to kickoff? When the system was changed for 2009, we were able to get it in December, is something similar going to happen? Really sad to have missed this. We're just itching to get our hands on it and have no qualms sharing everything we learn :(

JC, we communicated about the beta application via Facebook and tweets in addition to the blog, but we probably should have included it in a team email blast as well. Sorry about that, we'll do that next time. Unfortunately, it is too late to get in, and FIRST is not planning to make the control system and software available before Kickoff. Teams can pre-order the roboRIO itself through AndyMark now, but they won't be shipping until the end of the year. Keep in mind the software still won't be available until Kickoff. You could hook up with a local beta team if one is close by.

My team was wondering if FIRST would be establishing some way of contacting the other teams that will be Beta testing? Such as a facebook page that all of the teams involved can partake in if they choose; so as to help boost the efficiency of the problem solving and learning processes. I know FIRST will be very responsive and active of teams that have any questions/problems, but we were just thinking that if the student community were able to easily converse with others and to help each other out in the testing process then this beta testing process would be more efficient and productive.
