Process Overview for FIRST Lead Coaches/Mentors

FIRST® has established a secure on-line registration system to make the process of registering youth team members easier and the management of paperwork less costly. The following information outlines the steps to register youth team members.

FIRST® Robotics Competition and FIRST® Tech Challenge:

  • The Lead Coach/Mentor provides youth team members age 13 and older the link to register: https://my.usfirst.org/stims/site.lasso.  This can be done in person or through an email invite via the TIMS registration system (for those under 13, please follow directions under FIRST® LEGO® League and Junior FIRST® LEGO® League below).
  • The youth team member creates a user account and applies to team.
  • The youth team member provides limited information and his/her parent/guardian completes the registration process and signs the FIRST Consent and Release Form.
  • As part of the registration process the Lead Coach/Mentor and parents/guardians of youth team members under 18 will receive an email stating that the team member has Applied to the Team.
  • The Lead Coach/Mentor will Accept or Decline the youth team member on the team.
  • The youth team member and parent/guardian will be notified by email when the youth team member application status is determined. Declined team members will remain on the screen but will not display on the Team Roster.
  • The Lead Coach/Mentor can access the roster of registered team members in the “Student Team Member Summary” page in TIMS. This screen displays contact information from the youth team member registration system including: youth team member and parent name, their email addresses and phone numbers, youth team member application status, FIRST Consent and Release Form status and date completed. This information constitutes the Team Roster which is required for FIRST events and competitions, including Kickoffs.

FIRST® LEGO® League and Junior FIRST® LEGO® League

  • The Lead Coach/Mentor will invite the parent/guardian of the youth team member in the “Student Team Member Summary” section of the team registration system.
  • An automated email will be sent to the parent/guardian with information on how to register the youth team member.
  • As part of the registration process, the Lead Coach/Mentor will receive an email stating that the youth team member has Applied to the Team.
  • The Lead Coach/Mentor will Accept or Decline the youth team member on the team.
  • Parents/Guardians will be notified by email when the team member application status is determined. Declined students will remain on the screen but will not display on the Team Roster.
  • The Lead Coach/Mentor will access the roster of registered team members in the “Student Team Member Summary” page in TIMS. This screen displays contact information from the team member registration system including: student and parent name, their email addresses and phone numbers, application status, FIRST Consent and Release form status and date completed. This information also constitutes the Team Roster which is required for Kickoff and Event Participation.

Duplicate Applications

If a youth team member has created a duplicate account in the youth team member registration system, this will show in the team registration system, roster area.  The Lead Coach/Mentor should click “Decline” on the duplicate application.

Electronic FIRST Consent and Release Form

  • Parents/Guardians of youth team members under age 18 will complete the FIRST Consent and Release Form and registration for their child; youth team members over the age of 18 may complete their own. 
  • Once the FIRST Consent and Release Form is completed, the status and date completed will be updated on the Team Roster.   
  • The Lead Coach/Mentor must confirm the status is complete for each youth team member; if it is not, he/she should let the youth team member know to remind parent it needs to be done.
  • The FIRST Consent and Release Form must be completed to attend any FIRST events and competitions, including Kickoffs.

Team Roster

  • To print the Team Roster, access the Team Roster using the View button from the Team Summary Page in TIMS. Click the Printable Team Roster button.
  • Declined students will remain on the “Student Team Summary” screen but will not display on the Team Roster.

If you have parents/guardians who do not have access to the internet or computer:

  • We strongly encourage all parents/guardians to complete the on-line registration process.  In the event that they are not able to access the internet or a computer, a paper version of the registration process is available.  Please note that all team members who use the paper registration forms must bring a completed copy to every FIRST event they attend.

IMPORTANT:

  • All youth team members must have a completed FIRST Consent and Release Form
  • You MUST bring a printed Team Roster with you to all FIRST events and competitions including Kickoffs.
